In an abstract presented at the annual GI meeting May 2018 (DDW), patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, with the predominant symptom of bloating, were treated with either Fecal Microbial Transplant (FMT) or Placebo. The randomization was 2:1, so 42 IBS patients received FMT, and 19 received Placebo (their own stool). 58% of the FMT group reported lessening of their symptoms versus 28% of the Placebo group. But, by one year, the FMT advantage in symptom reduction had worn off. So, in this small group, there may have been some short term benefit, but not long term success. MS
